On July 15, 2016 President Obama signed The FAA Extension, Safety, and Security Act of 2016. Reforms include an option to the Third Class Medical, it limits when a Special Issuances (SI) is required, and it directs the FAA to increase the number of “Conditions for which an AME Can Issue” (CACI). The new Third Class Medical option can be used for flying singles and twins up to 6,000 pounds. There is a ceiling of 18,000’, and the true airspeed cannot exceed 220 knots. Day or night and VFR or IFR operations are permitted, and you may transport up to five passengers plus yourself. Below 18,000’ there is no limitation to the type of airspace you can operate in. Of course the pilot and equipment must have the appropriate certifications for the flight contemplated. The actual regulations around the Act are to be delivered by end of January, with enforcement starting some time this summer.
